Last Light

The last light of this day
illuminates the tips of maple branches
in the east,
a reflection of sunset.

My mother used to say,
standing on her central Mexico
rooftop,
that it is important
to watch the sunset
in all 360 degrees.
For it is not only the setting sun
that casts its beauty.
Sometimes,
she said,
it is the reflection of beauty
that shines most bright.

This maple,
gathering the final rays
of red,
of gold,
with an inner light
shares a silent secret
with those who notice.

I sit, silent with it.
Together
we pay homage
to the turning
of the day.
